Voting for Speaker is under way

Members of Parliament have started voting for a Speaker at the first sitting of the 12th Parliament presided over by the Chief Justice, Flavian Zeija.
President Yoweri Museveni is in attendance.

By secret ballot, members are choosing among: Jacob Oboth, Paul Mwiru and Nobert Mao.

Katakwi District Woman Representative, Hon. Jessica Alupo nominated West Budama Central MP, Hon. Jacob Markson Oboth, seconded by Kibaale County MP, Hon.  Frank Tumwebaze.

Earlier, President Museveni arrived at Kololo

Katikamu South MP, Hon. Hassan Kirumira nominated Jinja South East MP, Hon. Paul Mwiru, the candidate presented by the Opposition.

Laroo-Pece Division MP, Hon. Norbert Mao was nominated by Tochi County MP, Hon. Peter Okot.

The Clerk is calling out each of the members to take their vote.

At the start of the process, the presiding officer, Chief Justice, Zeija, said the House has 370 members eligible to vote.

Once declared, the new Speaker will then preside over the election of the Deputy  Speaker.

MPs meet to elect Speaker, Deputy Speaker 

Legislators have started converging at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the first sitting of the 12th Parliament.

During this sitting, the legislators will elect the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament replacing Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa respectively.

The election of the Speaker is presided over by the Chief Justice or a Judge designated by him, as provided for by the Constitution of Uganda. After the election of the Speaker, the newly elected Speaker presides over the election of the Deputy Speaker.

Members of the 12th Parliament were sworn in last week, and are meeting for the first time at the Kololo Independence Grounds.
